Story: I run successful consulting business that includes some of the BEST clients in the world!
I am always seeking new business, but the business must be a great "fit" for my
very, very niche business.
A small business owner called to talk about how I may be helpful to him as he seeks to
grow his business. In the ensuing conversation, he stated that:
1. He hated making outbound marketing calls
and
2. He wasn't very good at networking, and didn't want to learn how to improve his skills.
After we talked, I told him I didn't think I would be a good fit for him. He seemed
shocked! I explained that if we worked together, I would be telling him he had to do the
very two things he hated most in the world to do, AND, he would have to pay me well to fly
in and tell him so.
Further, I explained that I couldn't afford to have an unhappy client in my narrow, niche
market. Most of my clients are referrals from happy clients!
I am convinced that by using the "power of no" in this situation I saved myself
not only a headache, but an unhappy client!
